Feedback and Grading Using JoeZoo Express Add-on

All of JoeZoo’s assessment tools for feedback and grading are located in the JoeZoo Express add-on. All of JoeZoo’s resource creating and progress tracking features are located in the JoeZoo App. Teachers can visit this resource to learn more about how the JoeZoo Express Add-on (in Google Docs) and JoeZoo App differ.

Text-to-Speech Comments

In JoeZoo Express, there is an accessibility feature that "reads" teacher text comments aloud to students. This feature is offered with any JoeZoo Pro Package. When students view their feedback on JoeZoo Express, they can click on a specific comment and then listen to the comment category, explanation, and fix tip (if one was entered).

Teachers can direct students to use this resource if they need to adjust their browser settings for JoeZoo’s Text-to-Speech or Voice Comments.

Voice Commenting Tool

The JoeZoo Voice Commenting Tool allows teachers to add voice comments, of any length, to student assignments on Google Docs and track whether students apply their feedback. Teachers can use this resource if they need to adjust their browser settings to use JoeZoo’s Voice Comments.

Teachers can use the following steps to leave voice comments on students’ assignments:
  1. In the assignment on Google Docs, click open the “Add-ons” tab at the top
  2. Click on “JoeZoo Express” and then “Open JoeZoo Express”

Doc Versions

Teachers can see all versions of a student’s assignment pre and post assessment. Google Docs version history provides a snapshot of edits, however does not show if students actually actioned teacher feedback. Students can easily close Google comments and the teacher will never know if the student engaged with the comments. Teachers will not have a record of the comment once a student closes it.

Doc Versions provide teachers with insight throughout a student's writing process. Students who receive feedback throughout their writing process will find it more meaningful while the assignment is still relevant, while providing teachers deeper insight into the steps and improvement students make during their writing process. Teachers often intervene during students' writing process, however it is a time intensive task to track the writing progress of each student especially when there are multiple drafts along the way where one cannot easily compare one to the next.

Teachers can use Doc Versions to save time assessing students' written assignments, thus leaving more time for in-person conferencing on content-rich discussions.  Teachers can access a student’s doc versions using the following steps:

JoeZoo Express Add-On:

The assessment intelligence features in JoeZoo Express work continuously in the background to ensure the information for teachers is up to date and provides actionable and relevant insights.

Automated Assessment (Monkey Checker)

Teachers and students who are a part of any JoeZoo PRO packages (Teacher PRO, School PRO, or District PRO) will have access to our Assessment Automation feature, also known as JoeZoo’s Monkey Checker. Teachers can use the following steps to use the Monkey Checker to help save time with assessment:

Feedback Engagement

The JoeZoo Express Feedback Engagement Feature provides insight for teachers to see how students are engaging with their feedback. This unique feature offered by JoeZoo allows teachers to see if students are viewing teacher feedback, but also if they’re applying it to their work. Google Docs allows teachers to comment on student work, however the comments do not allow teachers to track if students have viewed it or engaged with it in any way. In addition, JoeZoo shows teachers what kind of feedback is most meaningful to each student, allowing teachers the ability to easily differentiate feedback.

Teachers can use the following steps to gain actionable insight into how a student engages with teacher feedback:
  1. In the assignment on Google Docs, click open the “Add-ons” tab at the top
  2. Click on “JoeZoo Express” and then “Open JoeZoo Express”
  3. Click “Monkey Checker” (brain icon) at the bottom of the add-on
  4. The Monkey Checker will display feedback into two categories, Writing Quality and Writing Effort
  5. The Feedback Engagement percentage will be in the Writing Effort section
  6. Click onto the percentage for more insight or to leave a comment

Length Goal

When creating or configuring an assignment on JoeZoo (web app), teachers can set a doc length goal for the number of words, sentences, and/or paragraphs. While teachers assess using JoeZoo Express, they can easily check if the student’s work reaches each goal. If not, teachers can simply click to add a comment reminding the student of the length goal.

To input an assignment length goal when configuring an assignment teachers can use this resource. Teachers can use the following steps to track and comment on a length goal for a student’s assignment:
  5. The length goal(s) will be in the Writing Effort section
  6. Click onto the goal for more insight or to leave a comment

Originality Checker

Teachers can often spot when students copy work from published sources, however it is often difficult to catch copying within the class. The JoeZoo Express Originality Checker analyzes and compares student work within a folder and will catch pieces of text that match very closely or are an exact match. The checker will provide the percentage of similarity between the students’ Google Doc assignments.

To input an assignment folder for JoeZoo's Originality Checker to scan when configuring an assignment, teachers can use this resource. Teachers can use the following steps to use the Originality Checker in JoeZoo Express:
  5. The originality checker will show how many instances of possible copying there are in the Writing Effort section
  6. Click onto the number of instances (if any) for more insight or to leave a comment

Class Page

Teachers who want to further track student and class progress can go to the JoeZoo web app and visit the Class Page, which contains the Dashboard, Students, Assignments and Details page. For more information, teachers can visit this resource.

Self-Assessment and Peer Assessment

Teachers should encourage students to conduct self-assessment and peer assessment using JoeZoo Express throughout their writing process. This allows students to improve their editing skills, become more reflective in their learning, and receive additional feedback, while helping teachers save time and effort in assessing.

Students are positively reinforced with JoeZoo Skill Badges when they conduct self-assessments and peer assessments and the more they engage with feedback, the easier it is to earn badges. For details on how students can conduct self and peer assessment, visit this student resource.
